Moldovan officials said that the decision was taken in coordination with the European Weightlifting Federation (EWF). The remaining members of the sports delegations of Russia and Belarus have undergone enhanced border control. But if national security risks are identified, they may be expelled from the country.

The European Weightlifting Championship is being held in Moldova for the first time. More than 300 athletes from 40 countries will take part in the competition, held at the Arena Chișinău from April 13 to 21.
