A draft bill developed by the agency to amend the Waste Management Act has been submitted for public consultation
Specifically, the proposal calls for banning the use of plastic funeral wreaths and decorations by adding them to the list of single-use plastic items.
These items are made of mixed materials, including plastic, synthetic textiles, wire, stands, and decorative elements, which makes it difficult to separate the materials and recycle them.
It is estimated that more than 62 metric tons of funeral products accumulate annually in the capital alone.
Acting Minister of the Environment Gheorghe Hazder stated today after a government meeting that the bill provides for a ban on the entire commercial trade in funeral wreaths made of artificial materials—from import and sale to their use in cemeteries.
According to him, this measure is part of efforts to reduce the use of plastic waste and promote eco-friendly alternatives.
Once public consultations are complete, the draft amendments to the Waste Management Law will be submitted to the government and parliament for approval.
