Romania wants to join the OECD in 2026

This was announced by Romanian Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare. He emphasized that this represents a decisive step in the functioning of the Romanian state in the coming years, comparable in its impact to the accession to NATO and the European Union.

“OECD means clear rules, functioning institutions and public policies based on data and experience from developed economies – in fact, a new level of openness and a new stage of development for Romania. Joining the OECD is not just a question of status, but of how we govern: how we raise funds more efficiently, how we invest better and how we build confidence – both in Romanians at home and in those who live and work in other countries,” the minister wrote on his Facebook page.

He claims that recently, including through discussions in Paris with OECD representatives, Romania has taken concrete steps that bring it closer to the goal of joining the OECD in 2026 and consolidating the reforms implemented.

Nazare says accession brings economic benefits, including increased investment, lower financing costs for the state, and more efficient and predictable public policies.

“Joining the OECD will be a new historic moment with a real impact on the development and modernization of the country,” Nazare said.

The OECD now has 38 member countries “representing the world’s most economically developed nations, striving for democracy and market economies, to work together on economic and social issues.”

The organization does not include China, Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the UAE, Brazil, Argentina and a number of other countries that play major roles in the global economy.
