According to the Ministry of Environment, mining without an effective reclamation system causes serious damage to the environment: it destroys agricultural land, leads to vegetation degradation and waste accumulation. Due to the high cost of remediation, companies often delay or avoid fulfilling their obligations.
To solve the problem, the authorities want to introduce a special mechanism for financing the reclamation and elimination of the consequences of mining activities. According to the project, companies will be obliged to provide a financial guarantee and annually transfer 0.25% of its amount to a treasury account administered by the state. These funds will be used in case of default.
As previously reported Logos Press, the authorities also intend to introduce a system of total accounting in the industry. Reporting will become mandatory for all entities, which will eliminate “gray zones”. For the first time, a separate form – monitoring of critical raw materials – is being introduced.
According to official data, as of the beginning of 2025, there are 436 mineral deposits in Moldova, of which 192 are in exploitation.
