According to the source, the average after-tax salary in Moldova was $615—exactly the same as in Micronesia and Thailand.
By comparison, Switzerland topped the ranking at $8,218 (roughly 13 times more than in Moldova); Luxembourg at $6,740; and the United States at $6,562.
Among the countries Moldovans aspire to move to: Germany at $4,091, Israel at $3,715, and Italy at $2,870.
Among neighboring countries: Russia — $2,266, Romania — $1,413, Ukraine — $537.
Angola, Lesotho, and Palestine ($104) bring up the rear.
However, the authors of the study note that it is incorrect to compare only salary levels. The real standard of living is also influenced by inflation, the cost of living, and the population’s purchasing power.
