The head of state said that Traian Basescu supported the Moldovan citizens “with all his strength and without reservations”, contributing to the promotion of the country’s interests, including in the restoration of the Romanian citizenship and the granting of scholarships for young people.
“Mr. Basescu is respected and welcomed as a brother here in the Republic of Moldova. I am glad that we managed to correct the injustice committed against Mr. Basescu and I am honored to grant him the Moldovan citizenship,” Maia Sandu said.
She also said that from today, the former Romanian president is “not only our brother, but also our fellow citizen”, inviting him: “We are waiting for you at home.”
Traian Basescu was previously granted Moldovan citizenship in 2016 by a decree of President Nicolae Timofti, but it was revoked in 2017 during the presidential term of Igor Dodon. This decision was subsequently upheld in court proceedings, culminating in the final verdict of the Supreme Court of Justice in 2018.
Traian Basescu served as President of Romania from 2004 to 2014.
