On the side opposite the driver, these vehicles must be equipped with exterior mirrors—a Class IV wide-angle rearview mirror and a Class V close-proximity mirror. This equipment must cover at least 95% of the field of view and reduce “blind spots.”
Exceptions will be made for vehicles in categories N2 and N3 registered before January 1, 2000, vehicles that are technically impossible to equip with such mirrors, as well as certain N2 trucks weighing up to 7.5 metric tons.
The draft was prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development.
As the authors note in the explanatory notes to the draft, these requirements are driven by the high risk of accidents when making turns. Insufficient visibility, especially on the side opposite the driver, increases the risk of accidents involving pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
Most vehicles in use in Moldova are already factory-equipped with mirrors or were previously used on the European market. The remaining vehicle owners will have to retrofit their vehicles.
The draft also provides for the adaptation of requirements for traffic signs. They must be recognizable not only by drivers but also by automated driver-assistance systems used in modern vehicles.
