An attempt was made to bring out more than a metric ton of cigarette packs from Moldova

Customs officers at the Otach checkpoint on the border leaving the Republic of Moldova (toward Mogilev-Podolsk, Ukraine) discovered more than a metric ton of cigarette cartons after a Renault Magnum truck, driven by a 54-year-old Moldovan national, arrived for customs clearance.

According to the accompanying documents, the truck was transporting waste paper and paper scraps.

Based on a risk assessment, customs officials ordered a detailed physical inspection of the vehicle and its cargo. As a result, four pallets and a flexible container containing packs of cigarettes with various advertising slogans, with a total weight of 1,024 kg, were discovered; customs authorities declared them to be counterfeit.

The investigation into the case is ongoing with the aim of establishing all the circumstances and applying the necessary legal measures in accordance with the provisions of Article 380 of the Customs Code.

However, it is already clear that this may involve an international criminal group in which cigarette packaging is printed in Moldova, the cigarettes themselves are manufactured in Ukraine, and are then shipped either to Romania and other European countries or back to Moldova.
