Munteanu Emergency in the energy sector

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu said the decision is related to Russia’s overnight strikes on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure, which led to the disconnection the main Vulcanesti-Isacca power line.

Despite the operation of four interconnection lines with Romania, the situation remains difficult and requires urgent measures.

The emergency situation will allow the Government to act promptly and in a coordinated manner, mobilize additional resources, protect critical infrastructure and, if necessary, introduce measures to minimize the consequences of the crisis.

On Tuesday afternoon, March 24, government representatives, together with ministers and those responsible for managing the situation, will go to Parliament to present all the arguments and measures and gain the support of MPs.

“The main goal of these actions is to ensure the security of citizens and a stable supply of electricity and other basic resources despite external threats,” the government said.

Earlier, the prime minister said that alternative supply routes have been activated after the Vulcanesti-Isakcea power line was cut to prevent blackouts, but the situation remains unstable.

The Moldovan prime minister and president called Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure a “war crime”.

UPDATE 14:30

The government has decided to declare a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days. It must now be approved by parliament.

‘The situation remains difficult; widespread power cuts remain a possibility and, unfortunately, we cannot completely rule out the risk of further attacks on infrastructure. Thus, a real threat to the country’s energy security persists. Furthermore, against the backdrop of events in the Persian Gulf region and pressure on global energy markets, our response must be unequivocal,” the Prime Minister stated.
