According to the State Enterprise “Railways of Moldova” (CFM), in 2022-2023 the transportation of these cargoes ensured the full operation of CFM, but gradually these flows were diverted through Romania.
“Our goal is to identify opportunities to resume the transit of Ukrainian cargoes to and from the European Union countries via Moldovan railway lines, given that the flow of cargoes and passengers through Moldova was actually redirected in the current situation in the region as a result of the war in Ukraine,” CFM’s press service said.
This topic was discussed at a meeting of Moldovan railroad workers with representatives of Ukrzaliznytsia JSC in Kiev.
CFM representatives also raised the issue of the possibility of using the ferry crossing for transportation of cargo in freight cars from the port of Chernomorsk (Ukraine) to the port of Batumi (Georgia).
It should be reminded that after the cessation of cargo transit from Ukraine and back CFM found itself on the verge of bankruptcy and is now actively trying to find some ways to revitalize its activities. For example, the circulation of the Chisinau-Odessa passenger train is being resumed, although it is not very safe in the conditions of the ongoing hostilities in the neighboring country.
