By the votes of the ruling party’s parliamentary faction, the new law on subsidies in Moldovan agriculture was approved in its final reading. The law contains many new things – from its name to its principles. The law is very ambiguous – at the draft stage it gathered both a lot of criticism and flattering reviews. But the most important thing is that the law will come into force from the new year.

In 2024, the world’s vineyard plantations covered 7.1 million hectares, a year-on-year decrease of 0.6%. According to this indicator, grapes are the second fruit crop in the world. Grapes are grown in 94 countries, but just over half of the world’s crop is destined for winemaking.

There are reasons to hope that this year Moldova will have a very good harvest of oilseed crops. The area under crops has noticeably increased: about 100 thousand hectares have been allocated for rape, which is many times more than last year, sunflower – more than 420 thousand hectares. At the moment, agronomists assess the condition of crops as “good and very good”.

According to the ranking of the largest bulk wine exporting countries for 2024, compiled by the American Association of Wine Economists (AAWE) based on UN Comtrade data, Moldova ranks 12th.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova, in May, compared to the level of the previous month, consumer (retail) food prices increased insignificantly – only by 1%. However, compared to their level at the beginning of 2025, the increase is more pronounced – plus 6.5%. And compared to the prices in May 2024, food prices rose by 9.7%.

The National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova issued curious data on the Moldovan labor market in the first quarter of 2025. In the total number of registered vacancies (about 33 thousand), the share of agriculture is only 2.5%, with only 917 offers. The wine.md company (it owns the wine library and tasting room of the same name), which has already organized two festivals – Wine Picnic and Vin de Autor – has created a new format of the wine festival – Wine Park. It was tested on May 30-31.

The area of grain corn sown for the harvest-2025 has shrunk to about 300 thousand hectares. Last year, this crop occupied 464 thousand hectares in the Republic of Moldova.

In January-April, Moldova exported $69.5 million worth of wine products, which is 3% less than in the same period last year. The decline could be explained by the general impact of the global economic crisis, but in this case it is not about our industry.

The sales season of Moldovan apples of last year’s harvest has come to a close. The stocks of export-quality goods are almost exhausted, and they will be barely enough to supply the domestic market of Moldova in June – the last month of the “apple” 2024-25 marketing year (MY). Logos Press correspondent tried, with the help of experts from two corporate associations of fruit business, to make a balance of the passing season and analyze the preconditions of the situation on the market of this fruit in the new MY.

In Moldova, there are still places where wild grapes – Vitis vinifera Sylvestris – still grow. Within the framework of the project “7000 Years Under Wine”, an experimental wine was produced from it two years in a row.

When the national wine brand “Wine of Moldova. A legend alive”, unfortunately, it did not have a declared legend behind it. Foreigners often asked: “What is this legend?”. There was no answer. Now there is one, because the territory of modern Moldova was in the center of Cucuteni-Tripolye culture, which belongs to the earliest civilizations of the Neolithic era. And there are archaeological artifacts confirming that the local inhabitants were familiar with grapes.
