The end of the year is the very period when even workaholics in the workplace (almost) all thoughts are about the festive table, gifts and feelings. All the more so if New Year’s treats/entertainment is an economic concept, and workers work in the agri-food sector.

National statistics has compared the “consumption profile” of the inhabitants of the Moldovan capital (we must assume that they are the most affluent inhabitants of Moldova) with that of the average population of the European Union. The profiles differ, but ambiguously in someone’s favor.

Last week saw the end of the third round of farmer applications for subsidies this year – this time post-investment. This week, AIPA, the Agency for Interventions and Payments in Agriculture, has already presented a blitz analysis of the framework parameters accepted for consideration of “farmer dossiers” for subsidies. The first thing that catches the eye is the total amount requested – almost LE 1.5 billion. This is about 50% more than the staff of non-governmental organizations of agricultural producers predicted.

The turbulent end to the sugar beet processing and sugar production season in Moldova could take on a dramatic turn. If the weather conditions are unfavourable, the season could end, as sugar producers say, ‘even in March next year.’ From their point of view, this is not a major problem. Of course, this is without taking into account the additional risks, costs, guaranteed increase in production costs and the price of the final product – Moldovan sugar.

MAIA Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry announces the launch of the national campaign “Cumpar BUN de-acasa” – an initiative that invites Moldovan citizens to choose local products: both during winter holidays and throughout the year.

In spite of significant shortfall of fruit harvest due to spring frosts, as well as reduction of their quality due to summer drought and autumn precipitation, prices for many types of products of the fruit growing sector increased. Accordingly, even in the conditions of physical decrease of exports, their financial indicators increased. This was much and colorfully discussed in the last days of November within the XI annual conference “Fruit Business of Moldova”. And, perhaps, for the first time in its long history, the conference started with singing a beautiful and optimistic song about the richness of the Moldovan land.

“We thank everyone who creates the opportunity for Moldova to have domestically produced food and stronger local communities.” The MAIA Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry awarded 140 farmers on the occasion of the professional holiday – the Day of Agricultural Worker, traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of November.

A note for inbred robinguds and noble (by virtue of their official position) sheriffs. There is a chance to get hunting grounds (from 5 thousand hectares and more) for use for 15 years on the results of hammer auction “for increase”. The price of the “entrance ticket” to the auction is 1.2 thousand lei. The starting price of the minimum lot is about 20 thousand lei (the amount of annual rent). But there are more “fat pieces” – for hundreds of thousands of lei.

Due to large-scale supplies of soybean meal from Ukraine to Moldova, the price of this commodity on the Moldovan market has significantly decreased, which is good for local livestock farmers, but bad for local soybean processors.

“After all, if stars are lit up, it means that someone needs it”? And if in addition to the multitude of non-governmental associations (with rural roots), another new organization appears in Moldova, focused on dialogue with the authorities – it means that this dialogue is not all right yet.

The sharply increased retail prices for mackerel became the main meme of the Moldovan information space in the past week. In social networks, consumers without a sense of humor posted photos of doubled price tags of some supermarket chains with angry remarks. Consumers with a sense of humor joked about “dream fish”.

A month and a half is left till the end of this year, and these are the most “working months” in the export sales season. At least, for some types of Moldovan fruits. However, the specifics of the harvested crop and external commodity flows in the first half of the fall show that the chances for a hundred percent selection of new (increased) quotas for duty-free export of fruits to the European Union are, alas, small.
