In Moldova, there are only 0.2 hectares of forest plantations per inhabitant, while the world average is 0.5 hectares. Our country ranks 122nd out of 188 in the world ranking.

On the path of European integration in the past year, the country continued to stumble over systemic problems. One of the most acute of them is demographic. And any development plan, even the most elaborate one, cannot be realized without people. We seem to have serious problems with this.

Exactly three years ago, the Parliament amended the Law on Health Protection to transfer district hospitals from the subordination of district councils to the Ministry of Health. Since February 2023, medical institutions have started working under the new conditions.

The total income of the Compulsory Health Insurance Funds (CHIF) for 2026 will amount to over 18 billion 832 million lei, while the volume of expenses will be over 19 billion 217 million lei, with a deficit of 385 million lei. Revenues are growing by 8.3%, while expenditures are growing by 10.5%. The cost of the medical policy (fixed amount of 12636 lei) and the percentage of contributions (9%) will remain the same.

Former ambassador and former MP Igor Munteanu, a consultant at the New Strategy Center, a Romanian think tank specializing in foreign policy, defense and security, told Logos Press that the case of arms smuggling through Albica is only the tip of the iceberg. According to him, systemic problems of border and customs control, deep-rooted corruption and insufficient prevention make possible numerous undetected cases of smuggling and transportation of military equipment.

On Wednesday, the parliamentary commission for national security, defense and public order held hearings on a number of acute and high-profile problems that have seriously alarmed society in recent weeks. Among them is the case of the discovery of a vehicle full of ammunition at the Leuseni-Albica checkpoint on November 20.

In recent weeks alone, two groups of drug traffickers have been exposed in Moldova. Large quantities of drugs totaling more than 8 million lei were seized. Such news has long ceased to be a sensation. But the news that two drug laboratories were “covered” in our country shocked even the most imperturbable observers. An international network for the production and trade of amphetamine and methamphetamine, operating in Moldova, Poland and Hungary, was uncovered. Four laboratories were identified, of which two were in Moldova, and 16 people in five countries were detained. As part of the criminal prosecution, authorities documented the trafficking by the group of criminals of approximately 30 kilograms of amphetamine worth about €2.1 million. And that’s a whole other level of threat, albeit one that has been uncovered – this time.

According to the average intelligence quotient (IQ – intelligence quotient), as of January 1, 2025, the inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova ranked 62nd in the world out of 126 countries. The rating is compiled annually by the portal international-iq-test.com. This is the only official website of the “International IQ Test”, which has been operating since 2018.

In order to understand the logic of determining the number of ballots and their distribution among polling stations at home and abroad, it is useful to review data from some sources.

Over the last three election campaigns, the number of polling stations for Moldovan citizens in Western countries has doubled, reaching 297 (the number may still change slightly). Voter participation has also increased – from 150-200 thousand to 330 thousand in the last presidential elections. It is on the basis of these dynamics that the Central Election Commission (CEC) approves the number of polling stations and ballots abroad. As its chairwoman Angelika Karaman noted at the CEC meeting, for this year’s parliamentary elections the Foreign Ministry requested 1,098,000 ballots, including: 105,500 in Russian, 1,500 in Ukrainian and 500 in Gagauz. For comparison, it is planned to print 2,772,255 ballots for the polling stations on the territory of the country.

The second set of final data from the 2024 census campaign provides an opportunity not only to look at the demographic, migration and educational profile of the population, but also to assess the changes that have occurred over the past ten years. They are ambiguous.

This year, five amateur folklore groups from Moldova participated in the XI International Forum “Bulgarian Heritage”, which is organized annually in the town of Balchik (Bulgaria) by the local organization “Commonwealth “Bulgarian Heritage” under the leadership of Marusi Kostova. It was held from August 22 to 24. The forum is attended by representatives of the Bulgarian diaspora living compactly abroad – amateur artists, scientists, writers and public figures from neighboring countries – Romania, Ukraine and Moldova, as well as from Bulgaria itself.
