For the umpteenth time, fiscal austerity has opened the door for populist political parties. In the UK, France, Poland and other countries, populists succeed by criticizing “fiscally responsible” governments that cut spending.
Now everyone is already preparing for the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28. In this context, any serious discussion about the country’s development paths, the state of Moldova’s economy, the necessary radical and comprehensive measures to radically break the established state system, which is already completely rotten and shows its insolvency, are perceived exclusively through the prism of the political context and the upcoming elections.
Foreign trade statistics indicates a significant decline in export revenues. And the structure of demand for foreign currency on the part of business demonstrates an increasingly pronounced gap with import dynamics, analysts of the National Bank record. According to their estimates, the current account deficit in the first quarter shows more than twofold increase on paper. In life, it has to be “covered” with something.
On June 30, 2025, the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) approved OPEM (“Operatorul Pieței de Energie M”) as the designated electricity market operator in Moldova, responsible for achieving interconnection in the international day-ahead and intra-day market.

It was the first rung of the ladder leading to our current pan-European prospects.
Even before U.S. President Donald Trump’s attack on the global economy, it was experiencing not only a structural crisis, but also a crisis of values that once justified and guided international cooperation. The declining role of multilateralism, i.e. multilateral relations, is explained not only by the weakening of international organizations and geopolitical tensions, but also by the loss of unified principles of international cooperation, the shift to unilateralism, transactional diplomacy, and zero-sum nationalism.
