Kaja Kallas: Transnistria will not be an obstacle for Moldova’s European future

"Accession is not only a technical process, it is also a political commitment. As we move forward in this process, I want to assure you that Transnistria will not be an obstacle to Moldova's European future," European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said in Chisinau at a joint press conference with President Maia Sandu.

Callas announced that “very soon we will hold the second summit between the European Union and Moldova in Brussels.” “Moldova already belongs to the European community”.

According to the EU representative, Moldova is “one of the strongest and closest partners of the European Union”.

“But we want you to be part of the European Union. We recognize the significant progress you have made by implementing such difficult reforms. We really appreciate your speed and determination,” Kaja Kallas said.

“An act of strategic coherence for the whole of the EU.”

For her part, President Maia Sandu said she counts on the European Union’s continued support to strengthen Moldova’s security and develop the country’s defense capabilities.

The head of state thanked for the personal involvement in the increase of the financial assistance aimed at consolidating peace and security in Moldova, stressing that the European support is especially important in the context of regional security challenges.

“With each investment in our security capabilities, Moldova becomes a stronger partner – for the stability of the region, for the security of the EU’s eastern border and for the entire European project. Moldova is already contributing to regional security. Our military is participating in peacekeeping missions in Kosovo, Bosnia and Lebanon. Our firefighters, together with their colleagues from European countries, extinguish large-scale fires,” the president said.

Maia Sandu reiterated Moldova’s commitment to the European path, expressing confidence that the EU support will help build a safer, stable and prosperous country.

“This is why Moldova’s accession to the European Union will be an act of strategic consistency for the whole Union. Because we are a stable democracy on the eastern border, with first-hand experience of hybrid warfare, with real reforms underway and with the political will to be a reliable partner,” the president said.
