There will be an embargo on Moldovan wine
Such message was published on March 2 on the website of Ministry of Economy of Ukraine.
The restriction on the part of Moldova was introduced by the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) on January 26, 2026, No. 48 – as a reaction to the fact of detection of a prohibited antibiotic (metronidazole) in Ukrainian fodder previously imported to the Republic of Moldova. According to the publication of the above-mentioned ministry, the Ukrainian side reacted promptly: state control and initial inspection were carried out. Metronidazole was found in only one sample of feed, which indicates that the incident was not systematic. No violations were recorded in the poultry meat itself. On this basis, the Ukrainian Economy Ministry concluded that the notification of the Moldovan authorities to the World Trade Organization (WTO) “contains incorrect information about the reasons for the decision, which creates risks of spreading unjustified barriers for Ukrainian agro-food products in other countries”.
“The restrictions imposed by the Moldovan side are disproportionate and extended to products for which no violations have been recorded. If such decisions are not reconsidered on the basis of evidence-based results and scientifically substantiated risk assessment, Ukraine will apply the tools provided for by international agreements to protect its economic interests,” the ministry’s website quoted Deputy Minister Taras Vysotskyy as saying.
At the end of last week, the Moldovan Agriculture Ministry MAIA posted on its official website that “there is no embargo on Moldovan wines on the Ukrainian market”. The ministry said “that it has not received any official notifications from the Ukrainian authorities about possible restrictions on imports of wines or other wine products from Moldova”. At the same time, the ministry assured that “it is in constant contact with the competent Ukrainian authorities, the institutional dialog continues in a constructive manner in order to prevent any measures that could affect domestic producers or bilateral trade relations”.
