In 2025, 315 MW of solar power plants will be installed in Moldova
According to the National Center for Sustainable Energy in Moldova (CNED), 315.7 MW of solar energy was commissioned in the country last year. This result is a record for Moldova in a calendar year, surpassing the 209 MW commissioned in 2024.
The total capacity of solar power plants now stands at 710 MW, making solar energy the leading form of renewable energy in Moldova, accounting for 72% of the 980 MW of renewable energy installed by the end of last year.
Guarantees for large producers
To date, 408 MW of solar power has been deployed in Moldova under state support mechanisms. This includes 151 MW of solar power supported by a fixed tariff support scheme for solar parks up to 1 MW, under which successful projects receive 15-year fixed price guarantees of 1.16 MDL ($0.069)/kWh for the energy produced.
Accounting for small producers
Smaller scale solar installations for their own consumption were initially supported by a net-metering system (net-metering) established in 2018, with Moldova moving to a net-billing mechanism (net-billing) in early 2024. The original producer-consumers that participated in the net-metering system can continue to benefit from it until the end of 2027. Both support schemes allow for installations up to 200 kW.
According to CNED, by the end of last year, there were 8,713 solar energy producers and consumers in Moldova, consisting of individuals and legal entities, with a total installed capacity of 195 MW. Of this number, 5,051 producers installed their solar panels under the net metering scheme, covering 115 MW, while the remaining 80 MW comes from 3,662 producers who deployed solar panels under the net billing scheme.
The remaining 302 MW of solar power installed to date in Moldova is operating on the free market, which CNED believes demonstrates economic viability and high interest from international investors.
