Power Line Outage Leaves Moldova’s Energy System Vulnerable

Due to the Isaccea-Vulcanesti line outage, Moldova’s power system is operating in a vulnerable mode

UPDATED. As a result of attacks on energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine, the Isaccea-Vulcanesti (400 kV) overhead power line, one of the key elements of Moldova's energy system and an important link to the European power grid, was shut down.

According to state-owned Moldelectrica, the outage occurred after drone strikes near the energy infrastructure. Currently, technical faults have been identified on the line, which require specialized work and coordination between the operators of the electricity transmission systems of Moldova, Ukraine and Romania.

Despite the disconnection of the line, power supply to consumers in the country was not interrupted. During the night, the transmission system operator Moldelectrica, together with its colleagues from Romania and Ukraine, promptly activated alternative routes of electricity supply. In particular, four 110 kV inter-system transmission lines between Moldova and Romania are being used.

Nevertheless, the Isaccea-Vulcanesti line remains disconnected and the situation in the energy system is assessed as unstable. In this context, the authorities and the energy sector urge citizens and economic agents to consume electricity rationally, especially during peak hours, in order to avoid overloading the transmission and distribution networks, including cross-border high voltage lines.

Moldelectrica assured that it continues to monitor the situation around the clock and will inform the public as it develops.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure were a “war crime”.

“The overnight strikes led to the disconnection of Moldova’s key power supply line linking it to Europe. Alternative routes have already been activated, but the situation remains fragile. Responsibility lies entirely with Russia,” Sandu wrote on x (former Twitter).

Moldova’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the attacks, saying such actions undermine regional energy security and jeopardize critical civilian infrastructure. The ministry reiterated its support for Ukraine and strongly condemned any strikes on civilian targets.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu also commented on social media regarding the outage on the Isaccha–Vulcănești power line – which, in his view, once again jeopardises Moldova’s energy stability.

“Alternative supply routes have been activated to prevent power cuts, but the situation remains unstable,” the Prime Minister noted.

UPDATE 09:40

The mayor of the capital, Ion Ceban, has urged citizens to save electricity where possible and condemned the war and Russia’s attacks on Ukraine.
