President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu
At the beginning of her discourse, Maia Sandu said that we are living in difficult times, when the international order is undergoing profound changes and there are more and more conflicts at the global level – military, diplomatic and commercial. All this, in the opinion of the head of state, affects the life in Moldova and prevents the country from developing.
“As a country, we have many aspirations, many problems that need to be solved: to improve living conditions, to finalize the justice reform, to repair roads, hospitals, kindergartens, culture houses, to provide jobs and increase pensions. Sometimes, because we have so much to do, we forget what is most important. And the most important thing we need to do is to preserve peace and freedom,” Maya Sandu believes.
In her opinion, it is quite easy to do it – all we need to do is to join the European Union. She outlined three main postulates for the Moldovan society. “The first is peace and security of our families. The second is stability and national unity. The third is economic development and prosperity. There is no doubt that we can ensure peace and freedom much easier by joining the EU. There we will be protected in a big loving family. That is why we must work day and night to join the EU as soon as possible. Not in 10-20 years, but in the next four years,” the head of state emphasized.
The President believes that despite all the difficulties, Moldova is carrying out the necessary reforms and has achieved notable successes on the EU integration path. The head of state emphasized the investments in infrastructure, the increase in the population’s incomes despite the crises, as well as the progress in reforming the justice system: “We kicked oligarchs out of power, changed the political class, increased pensions and incomes, freed the country from energy blackmail, invested in villages and towns, started to clean up the justice system,” Maya Sandu listed the achievements of the current government.
She noted that the society expects much more from the justice reform, as the cornerstone of all transformations in the society. But she is sure that important steps have been taken in recent years to create an independent justice. The head of state said that 140 judges have left the judicial system in the last four years. Of them, 100 judges left in 2023-2024, when an extraordinary external evaluation was carried out. Maya Sandu considers this as evidence of the “purification” of the system.
“We live in a turbulent time in the world. But we have two treasures: the unity of the people and the support of those who wish us well. Moldova has real grounds for hope. I believe in Moldova. I know that we will get what we want – a protected, rich, clean and full of joy country”, – these are the words with which Maia Sandu ended her speech before the deputies of the ruling Action and Solidarity party.
