The ceremony on the National Mall was the highlight of the anniversary celebrations. Due to a thunderstorm and a storm warning, the ceremony had to be postponed for nearly two hours; however, once the weather improved, thousands of people returned to the Washington Monument to hear the president’s speech and watch the celebratory fireworks.
“The American Dream is back,” Trump declared, emphasizing that over the past 250 years, the United States has become “a beacon of hope, a promise, a light, and a source of glory among all the nations of the world.” According to him, no other country has done “as much good, shown as much courage, or achieved as much progress” as the United States.
According to Euronews, the president devoted a significant portion of his speech to issues of national security and domestic policy. He stated that the U.S. military “fought communism around the world not so that this threat would rear its head again in America itself,” comparing communism to a “cancerous tumor” that, in his words, “must be cut out.”
Trump also touched on the foreign policy agenda, stating that the U.S. had “defeated” Iran’s armed forces and recalling Washington’s actions regarding Venezuela.
Leaders and heads of state from around the world congratulated the United States on the 250th anniversary of its independence. Congratulatory messages were sent by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish President Karol Nawrocki, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Icelandic Prime Minister Kristurun Frostadóttir, and Pope Leo XIV.
In his address, King Charles III of the United Kingdom called the relationship between London and Washington “one of the closest and most productive alliances the world has ever seen,” noting its importance for security, trade, science, education, and culture. In France, to mark the U.S. Independence Day anniversary, the Eiffel Tower was illuminated in the colors of the American flag as a symbol of the historic partnership between the two countries.
The festivities in Washington, D.C., concluded with a spectacular fireworks display over the National Mall.
