Exports “swim” against the tide

In January-April, Moldova exported $69.5 million worth of wine products, which is 3% less than in the same period last year. The decline could be explained by the general impact of the global economic crisis, but in this case it is not about our industry.

Exports “swim” against the tide

Surprisingly, the Moldovan winemaking business has been quite successful in “swimming” against the current of global trends of decreasing sales not only of wine, but also of all consumer goods. According to the National Bureau of Grapes and Wine, in the first four months of the year, the enterprises of the industry managed to increase the volume of sales in the EU countries by 4%, up to $38.6 million. This direction is the leading one, as it accounts for more than half of the export of wine products (56%). There was also registered the growth of supplies to the CIS countries by 14%, up to $16.9 mln (before that there was a decline for a long time). The share of this direction is 24%. And an impressive growth (but still from a low base) of sales of our wines was noted in Africa – by 52%, up to $2.6 mln (their share is 4%).

The deterioration of the overall indicator of the industry exports was affected by changes in shipments to the USA, which decreased by 43%, to $8.5 mln. The share of the American continent in wine exports is 12%. And sales to Asia slipped slightly – by 2%, to $3 mln (the share of this direction is 4%).

Deliveries were made to 54 countries. Quiet wines form 64% of the export revenue. Divines and distillates contribute 20%, flavored wines such as vermouth – 9%, liqueur wines – 4% and sparkling wines – 3%.

If we consider sales by product type, their growth is observed in the categories of still, sparkling and liqueur wines and, accordingly, a decrease in the group of flavored wines and divines/distillates (see table).

It is known that successful sales on foreign markets require marketing activity. One of its types is participation in international tasting competitions. In Romania, the main market for Moldovan bottled wines (its share in export revenue is 30%), our wines won 80 medals at the Vinarium International Wine Contest. It was held on May 22-25 in Ploiesti. Among the Moldovan awards are five Big Gold Medals, 68 gold medals and seven silver medals.

A total of 1346 samples from 22 countries were registered in the contest. From Moldova, 174 samples of wines and divines from 29 enterprises participated.
