Which Freshwater Fish Is Safer to Buy in Moldova
English

What freshwater fish can be bought in Moldova without much risk?

After the "dirty story" with the Dniester, only some freshwater fish species can be considered relatively safe to buy on the Moldovan food market: carp, crucian carp and fathead carp, which in the vast majority of cases are raised in "standing water" - lakes and ponds.

As Ilya Trombitsky, environmental expert and director of Eco-TIRAS, noted for Logos Press, after the pollution of the Dniester with substances, the nature of which has not yet been (officially) disclosed to the Moldovan population, the consumption of river fish seems to be very risky for several years. Consequently, at present, for the consumer it can be considered justified to buy freshwater fish, first of all, in authorized points of sale from legal sellers. In this case, even, conditionally, “in the open-air market” without much risk you can buy fresh carp, crucian carp, fathead carp. In other words, fish that have, for the most part, undoubtedly been caught in ponds and lakes. Whereas predatory fish (pike, zander, perch, catfish), as well as bream, roach and Danube herring are most likely of Dniester origin.

The seasonal ban on fishing is all the more relevant

From April 1, in order to protect water resources in Moldova, a fishing ban came into force, valid until June 15.

Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder said the National Agency for Food Safety will take samples of fish from the Dniester to check for contaminants, despite the stabilization of the water quality situation.

“Fishing is prohibited, but given that fish may have inhaled these substances back at the beginning of the crisis on the Dniester, it is recommended not to eat fish from the Dniester, at least in the coming months,” the minister was quoted as saying by tvrmoldova.md.

The authorities urge citizens to observe the restrictions and recommendations until the results of the analyses and confirmation of the safety of fish products from the Dniester are obtained. Yesterday, following a meeting organized on the platform of the National Centre for Crisis Management, it was reported that the situation on the Dniester has stabilized and that the previously established high alert regime will not be extended.
