This was announced today at a briefing by the head of the Environment Ministry, Gheorghe Hajder. The minister assured that no layoffs of foresters and forestry specialists are planned. According to him, the salaries of the sector’s employees may increase by 30%, and for some categories – even double.
“The reform is aimed at improving management efficiency and working conditions of field workers, whose current salaries of 6-9 thousand lei do not meet the living conditions. One of the key elements of the reform will be to ensure transparency: a single national price for timber will be introduced, and 30 certified warehouses will be built throughout the country, which will allow the population to buy timber at a clear price without intermediaries and ‘left’ sales,” states Gheorghe Hajder.
The aim of the modernization of the department is to improve the administration of the forest fund, eliminate corruption schemes and protect the forest resources of the country. The funds saved by optimizing Moldsilva can be used for forest protection and expansion. The afforestation rate of the country is only 11.6%, which is considered to be extremely insufficient to cope with global climate change and increasing droughts, the minister summarized.
