Moldovan leu "strengthened"
Thus, on March 11, the National Bank of Moldova set the official exchange rate at 20.0369 lei per euro (-4.47 bani) and 17.2153 lei per one dollar (-15.78 bani), while a day earlier it was 20.0816 lei per euro and 17.3731 lei per one dollar, respectively.
From 2025, the NBM uses the euro as the main reference currency to set the official exchange rate. This decision reduced the lei’s sharp leaps when the dollar exchange rate fluctuates on the world markets. And the inflation targeting policy of the National Bank allows preventing sharp fluctuations of the exchange rate. The volume of foreign currency reserves allows it so far.
The average purchase of euros on March 11: MDL 19.90 – 20.03 per 1 euro. Average sale: 20.20 – 20.28 MDL per 1 euro.
The leu exchange rate has become more predictable for business, as most of Moldova’s trade is tied to the European Union. The growth of agro-product exports to EU countries at the beginning of the year provided additional inflow of foreign currency earnings. A stable flow of funds from the diaspora saturates the domestic market with foreign currency.
