
Such final disaggregated data by localities is published today by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), indicating the size (category) of localities according to the number of inhabitants:
- 403 localities with populations between 500 and 999, of which only two are urban;
- 328 localities with a population between 200 and 499, all rural;
- 300 localities with a population between 1,000 and 1,999, of which 5 are urban;
- 192 localities with a population between 50 and 199, all rural;
- 135 localities with a population between 2000 and 4999, of which 11 are urban;
- 109 settlements with populations from 1 to 49, all rural;
- 28 localities with populations between 5,000 and 9,999, of which 17 are urban;
- 14 localities with populations between 10,000 and 19,999, of which 13 are urban;
- 5 localities with populations between 20,000 and 49,999, all urban;
- a single locality with a population between 50,000 and 99,999 (the town of Balti);
- One locality with more than 100,000 inhabitants (Chisinau city).
The largest population was concentrated in Chisinau city (567.0 thousand people, or 23.5% of the total population of the country), the only settlement with a population of more than 100 thousand people.
It is followed by localities with 1,000 to 1,999 inhabitants (17.5% of the total population), 2,000 to 4,999 inhabitants (16.6% of the total population) and 500 to 999 inhabitants (12% of the total population).
Smaller settlements have the smallest share of the total population: with less than 50 inhabitants (0.1%) and between 50 and 199 inhabitants (1%). The city of Balti (in the category of settlements with a population between 50,000 and 99,999 inhabitants) accommodates 3.8% of the country’s population.
Among the rural settlements, at the time of the census, the largest was the village of Stăuceni 5 (10.6 thousand inhabitants), followed by the village of Băcioi (9.3 thousand) and the village of Bubuechi (8.6 thousand), all within the municipality of Chisinau.
A total of 176 villages had a population of less than 100 inhabitants, including 29 villages with less than 10 inhabitants, and 4 settlements had only one permanent resident.
During the 2024 census campaign, census enumerators did not find a single person who was registered as having permanent residence in 9 localities in the country.
The “extinct” villages are Caraiman of Dondiushan district, Cetrisul Noi of Falesti district, Frumusica Noi of Floresti district, Stălinesti of Ocnita district, Nistreni of Rezina district, Gavrilovca of Singerei district, Dărkeucii Noi in Soroca district, Dobruşa and Bondareuca in Teleneş district.
