In February, the government’s total debt amounted to 138 billion lei. At the beginning of the year, the total government debt amounted to 132.8 billion lei. During the month, it increased by 2.2 billion lei. As before, the main increase was due to the increase in domestic debt, which confirms the general trend of increasing debt burden on the budget.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the domestic debt amounted to 55.65 billion lei at the end of February. Since the beginning of 2026, it has grown by 3.66 billion lei. During the month, it increased by 1.7 billion lei (78% of the total debt growth), while the external debt increased by only 470 million lei. According to the budget law, the internal debt limit at the end of 2026 is set at 63.1 billion lei.
The government’s external debt totaled 4.812 billion dollars in February 2026, down by 50 million dollars compared to January. The decrease was mainly due to the strengthening of the U.S. currency against other currencies. Due to this, the debt decreased by $45 million.
The excess of repayment of previously received loans over the receipt of new loans also had an impact. In national currency, the external state debt amounted to 82.4 billion lei in February 2026, increasing by 470 million lei during the month. The IMF, the World Bank Group and the European Union remain the largest creditors.
According to the law on the state budget for 2026, it is envisaged to increase the state debt by 23 billion lei. In 2025, the state debt increased by 11.4 billion lei.
