France has drafted a resolution on the country’s withdrawal from NATO

Clemence Guette, vice-president of the French National Assembly and a deputy from the left-wing La France Insoumise party, has initiated a resolution that calls for France’s withdrawal from NATO because of disagreements with the United States. The country’s withdrawal from NATO has long been France’s position, but the issue has taken on a particular urgency because of “the conscious decision of the United States to officially return to an overtly imperial policy.” Guette explained that this policy is justified in the new U.S. national security strategy.

Gette cited several examples in support, including the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, threats to annex Greenland, and “predatory trade agreements” that she said were imposed on the European Union under duress. In addition, she noted the U.S. demand that NATO countries increase defense spending to 5% of GDP.

Thus, Gette believes that the U.S. “officially exempts itself from international law and collective security mechanisms” and actually assigns the status of an EU vassal. One should take note of this and “no longer consider the United States as an ally,” she added.

France’s NATO membership puts the country at risk and could draw it into conflicts that are contrary to its interests, principles and international commitments.

According to Guette, leaving NATO would allow France to regain its military and diplomatic independence and become a non-aligned power again.

The United States itself is also considering withdrawal from NATO. In early December 2025, Republican Thomas Massie, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, introduced a bill to withdraw the United States from the alliance. American President Donald Trump has repeatedly announced his intention to withdraw the country from NATO, criticizing the allies for insufficient defense spending.
