According to government estimates, the annual economic effect of one digital nomad is about 186 thousand lei. This amount includes about 9 thousand lei of rental tax (based on an average rental cost of 500 euros per month), about 107 thousand lei of VAT on goods and services consumed on the territory of the country, as well as at least 70 thousand lei of income tax. With a projected number of 1,500 digital nomads, the total annual income of the state could reach 280 million lei.

The legal status of digital nomads will be enshrined in the law on admission, stay and control of foreigners in Moldova, drafted by the government.

An instrument to stimulate the economy

The document defines a digital nomad as a foreigner who performs remote work using information and communication technologies on the basis of an employment or civil law contract with a company registered outside the country, or is its participant or administrator. This category will be granted a temporary right to stay in Moldova for up to two years.

The authorities consider the attraction of digital nomads as one of the tools to stimulate the economy and increase the revenues of public funds.

According to official data, foreigners and stateless persons from about 130 states live and are registered on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. At the end of 2025, their number exceeded 21.5 thousand people, of whom more than 5.6 thousand had the right of permanent residence and about 16 thousand – temporary residence.
