Atlassian Central skyscraper could be the tallest hybrid timber building in the world

In Sydney, construction is well underway on the unusual Atlassian Central skyscraper, which is already standing out on the city skyline thanks to its bold architectural design. It will be one of the world's tallest towers with a hybrid timber structure combining wood, steel and concrete - materials that provide both strength and stability.

Atlassian Central skyscraper could be the tallest hybrid timber building in the world

To date, the building has been erected above 90 meters, and its final height will reach approximately 183 meters, which is more than double the height of the current record holder among hybrid wooden high-rises – Ascent in Milwaukee (USA) with a height of 86.6 meters, writes Naked Science. According to the Council on Building Heights and Urban Environment (CTBUH), if Atlassian Central is completed in this form, it will become the tallest completed project of this type in the world (excluding only conceptual projects in the early stages of approval).

The uniqueness of the structure lies in the combination of traditional building materials with a solid timber structure: engineered timber (glued poles and cross-glued panels) imported from Europe makes up a significant part of the scope of work – about 10,000 cubic meters. This solution helps reduce the project’s carbon footprint, while the innovative façade with integrated solar panels and an intelligent climate control system developed by EBSA is designed to reduce the need for mechanical room cooling.

The project also includes careful integration with the historic building on the site: the existing structure will be restored and incorporated into the main lobby of the new tower. Functionally, Atlassian Central will combine multiple uses: a hostel will open on the first floors, while the remaining 39 floors will be occupied by offices with outdoor garden areas, creating a hybrid space for work and leisure.

An exact occupancy date has not yet been confirmed, but the developers expect to complete the project by the end of 2026 or during 2027.
