On November 19, the State Secretaries for Transport from Moldova and Romania held a working meeting on the preparation of the application for financing the construction of a multimodal terminal in Ungheni at Beresti station, which will be submitted to the European Commission. Representatives of the Moldovan and Romanian authorities involved in the implementation of the project also took part in the discussion.
After the meeting, the participants visited Beresti railway station to analyze on site the proposed location and technical configuration of the area where the terminal will be built.
According to the initial analysis of the possibilities for the development of the terminal in Beresti, currently the main cargo flows through Moldova are in transit from Ukraine to the European Union and in the opposite direction. In the absence of logistics infrastructure, Moldova is excluded from the intensive commodity exchange, and thus deprived of significant revenues to the state budget. Carriers from the East and West prefer to choose routes bypassing Moldova. The construction of the terminal in Beresti will create many economic opportunities for the country, as well as benefits for neighboring countries. This strategic project will connect Moldova to international transport corridors, strengthen the country’s role as a rail logistics hub in the region, and integrate Moldova’s infrastructure into the EU network.
The Beresti railway station is located 106 km from Chisinau, outside the town of Ungheni on the northern side of the railway corridor that leads to the town of Balti and continues on to the Ukrainian border. The strategic location of the station is due to the proximity of the Romanian/EU border (5 km), as well as the connection to numerous industrial sites and transportation routes. This will allow the terminal to become a key center of trade and logistics activities in the region. The proposed site for the Beresti terminal covers an area of 80 ha, is owned by the State (through the Public Property Agency) and managed by the State Enterprise “Railways of Moldova”.
