In particular, the United States intends to terminate its participation in the authoritative Venice Commission. This structure operates under the auspices of the Council of Europe and is considered one of the key arbiters of international law. Its official name is the European Commission for Democracy through Law. Non-European states, including the United States, are also members of the Venice Commission.
Among the main tasks of the Venice Commission is to examine the legislation of its members in terms of the rule of law, constitutional justice and respect for human rights. Although the Commission’s conclusions are considered to be of a recommendatory nature, ignoring its assessments can significantly complicate relations between these states and the European Union. Brussels often in its policy makes the results of the Venice Commission’s expertise binding on the countries concerned.
But the United States itself, although it had the status of a full member of the Venice Commission, did not take into account the opinion of this structure in its policy (both domestic and international).
Therefore, for the United States itself, withdrawal from the Venice Commission is an insignificant step. But the structure itself, its authority and weight will probably suffer much more.
