Ungheni learns from the urban mobility experience of Italian Livorno
In this context, representatives of Ungheni Mayor’s Office and Ungheni Municipal Council made an experience exchange trip to the Italian city of Livorno in the Tuscany region.
According to the website of the Mayor’s Office, during the trip, Ungheni representatives studied regional and local strategies for the development of cycling routes in Tuscany, European projects and plans for sustainable urban mobility, the experience of implementing a bicycle identification system, as well as the presentation of regional cycling tourism networks, the integration of cycling routes into multimodal transportation systems and the development of services for cyclists.
Livorno, a city of about 160,000 inhabitants, has a wealth of experience in the development of cycling, both to promote healthy lifestyles and to explore this part of Italy by bicycle. Many cycling routes have been created here over the years, and detailed information (including elevation profiles and surface analysis) about each of them can be easily found on specialized websites and information boards.
Together with colleagues from other partner countries, the Ungheni visitors took part in cycling tours to see cycling routes in the Tuscany region first hand and understand what they look like.
At the end of the trip, the Town Hall made some important conclusions for themselves:
– the development of bicycle tourism is becoming an important element of sustainable urban mobility in today’s context;
– it contributes to environmental protection and, indirectly, to increasing resilience to climate change;
– it promotes tourism in general by allowing the exploration of tourist and landscape sites by bicycle;
– promotes a healthy lifestyle.
The study tour was carried out within the project “Improving cycling policy with a focus on climate change resilience, accessibility and safety” (CycleRight), funded by the European Union under the Interreg Europe program. In addition to Ungheni, the project involves other partners from Belgium, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Romania, Sweden and Poland.
