Ukraine resumes electricity exports. To Moldova

For the first time since November 2025, Ukraine started supplying electricity abroad. Specifically, on March 5, a minimum export to Moldova was recorded. Before that, the last time electricity was exported was on November 11, 2025.

However, experts caution: this does not mean that the energy crisis has been completely overcome, ExPro reports. The resumption of exports is “only episodic in nature.

  • Actual figures: during the day on March 5, only 12 MWh were transferred to Moldova during the night period.
  • Plans for March 6: companies have reserved 120 MWh of capacity for exports in the daily capacity auctions. The highest capacity booked for 10 hours is 20 MW.

It is noted that on March 5, large capacities – up to 61 MW in some hours – were registered at capacity allocation auctions, but they were not actually used.

Solar surplus does not cancel the overall deficit

The surplus occurs only in some hours due to active operation of solar power plants and stable generation of nuclear power plants against the background of spring warming that reduced consumption. ExPro analyst Daria Orlova notes that the energy system is now working very dynamically. The presence of a surplus during the day (when the sun shines) does not guarantee the absence of a deficit in the evening.

“If in certain hours there is an opportunity for exports, it does not mean that in other periods there cannot be a deficit – such variability is the norm,” the expert explains.

At the same time, most of the capacities damaged by the Russian attacks are still under long-term repair. Due to the shelling of infrastructure, blackouts can still be used in some regions.

Ukraine continues to buy significant amounts of energy from its neighbors. On March 5, imports totaled 27,000 MWh, thousands of times more than exports. More energy enters the system during the evening peak (about 1.4 GW).
