Chisinau receives over 70% of tourists

Almost 71% of tourists who stayed in accommodations upon arrival in Moldova prefer the capital city, Logos Press reported.

Chisinau receives over 70% of tourists

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the country’s tourism sector showed growth in the first half of 2025. The services of the sector were used by 228.3 thousand people, which is 8.7% more than in the same period of 2024.

In January-June 2025, tourist reception structures registered 156.6 thousand visitors (+ 6.2%). Of these, 39.3 thousand (25.1%) were residents and 117.3 thousand (74.9%) were non-residents. Tour operators served 179.7 thousand people (+7%), of whom almost 37 thousand foreigners trusted Moldovan travel agencies. The capital also became for them a transit point for further travels, which was used by even more foreign citizens who visited our country by transit.

Inbound tourism grew by 44.8% reaching 37.1 thousand people. Domestic tourism amounted to 44.8 thousand people, increasing by 3.1%. Collective accommodation structures (hotels, motels, boarding houses) were visited by 222.3 thousand guests and residents of the capital, which is 6.2% more than a year earlier. However, tourists did not stay long – 3.5 days on average.

More than half of them (58%) were foreign tourists. The majority came to visit from neighboring countries and Europe: Ukraine (34.5%), Romania (20.3%), USA (4.8%), Turkey (3.4%), Germany (3.2%), Israel (2.7%), Italy (2.6%), Poland (2.5%), Great Britain (2.0%), France (1.7%).

Chisinau Airport received 50% more passengers in the first half of 2025, compared to 2024. The most popular accommodation facilities were hotels, motels, agritourism resorts and sanatoriums.

During the reporting period, the number of tourists who traveled abroad through travel agencies and tour operators in Chisinau was 3.4 times higher than the number of foreign tourist arrivals. Moldovan citizens from Chisinau preferred to travel to Turkey (39,4%), Egypt (17,7%), Bulgaria (13,3%), Romania (13,0%), Greece (4,0%) and United Arab Emirates (2,1%).
