
At the end of 2023, the share of SMEs in the economy was slightly lower – 45.0%, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics. Small and medium-sized enterprises accounted for 99.2% of the total number of reporting companies, which is similar to 2023.
At the same time, the average number of SME employees increased by 2 percentage points to 356 thousand people, accounting for 65.5% of the total average number of employees of enterprises (compared to 65.3% in 2023).
The analysis of the SME indicators shows that in 2024 the average sales income per enterprise amounted to MDL 4.5 million, which is similar to the figure for 2023. The average sales income per employee increased to 865.2 thousand lei, which is 53 thousand lei (or 6.5%) more. At the same time, the average number of employees per enterprise in 2024 and 2023 amounted to 6 persons.
In 2024, the bulk of SMEs were registered in the trade sector – 21.7 thousand enterprises, or 31.8% of the total number.
In agriculture, forestry and fishing 6 thousand SMEs (8.8%), in manufacturing industry – 5.2 thousand (7.5%), in professional, scientific and technical activities – 6.6 thousand (9.7%) of the total number of SMEs.
In 2024, the proceeds from the realization of SMEs’ products will be 22 billion lei (or 7.7%) more than in 2023.
The volume of pre-tax profit obtained by SMEs in 2024 amounted to 30.868 billion lei, which is by 2.372 billion lei (or 8.3%) more than in the previous year.
According to the NBS data, in 2024 there were more than 68,000 SMEs operating in Moldova. For several years now, their number has been increasing by an average of one thousand per year.
