Sergiu Clesenco thanked the fans, players, coaching staff and the Moldovan Football Federation (FMF) for the support he felt during his four years as head coach. “During this time we have experienced many emotions, some of them not the most pleasant ones, for which I apologize, but there were also many good moments. We were one step away from a historic European Championship exit in 2024, we went up in the Nations League together. There are ups and downs in life. I think it’s time for a change. I think my decision to leave is the right one for me and for the whole team,” said the coach in an interview with the FMF press service.
The situation around the national team will be discussed by the members of the coaching committee. The meeting of the organization is scheduled for early next week, the report on its results will be sent to the FMF executive committee for decision-making.
The most sensitive were the recent defeats of the Moldovan national team in the qualifying cycle for the World Cup – from Israel (0:4) and Norway (1:11). “Tricolored” close the standings, which also includes the national teams of Israel, Italy, Norway and Estonia.
Serghei Cleschenko was appointed head coach of the national team of Moldova in December 2021. Prior to this post, he was in charge of the youth (U-17, U-19) and youth national teams. A former footballer, he was called up to the national team, for which he played in 69 matches and scored 11 goals.
