As noted in the materials of the Ministry of Finance, such dynamics was mainly due to the increase in the amounts allocated to the repayment of the principal debt. This includes the beginning of the repayment of the loan granted by the IMF through the EFF (tranche 6) and ECF (tranche 5), the repayment of loans granted by the European Investment Bank within the Moldova Drumuri III project (tranche 5) and the Livada Moldovei project (tranches 12-16), as well as the increase in the amounts allocated to the servicing of external public debt, taking into account the volume of payments made in 2024-2025.
The weighted average rate on external public borrowings in the first half of 2025 amounted to 2.17%, decreasing by 0.24 p.p. compared to the first half of 2024. In January-June 2025, the largest share in the total servicing of Moldova’s external public debt in the mentioned period fell on the EBRD – 64.9% ($237.1 million) and the IMF – 17.5% ($64.1 million).
At the same time, $317 million (equivalent to 5 billion 580.1 million lei) was allocated for the repayment of the principal amount of the debt in the first half of 2025, which is by $172.6 million more than in the same period of the previous year. For interest payments within the framework of external state debt servicing, $48.3 million (equivalent to 863.7 million lei) was transferred, which is by $0.4 million more than in the same period of 2024.
