Opposition proposes referendum on local government reform
According to the members of the formation, “the reform of local public administration was initiated by the PAS government with the aim of destroying local democracy.”
“Tomorrow your village could be left without a mayor’s office and you will have to travel 20-30 kilometers away to solve your problem,” Ion Ceban addresses the country’s residents in his Telegram channel.
“The government does not have a single document that clearly explains what the ‘reform’ will look like and why it is necessary to eliminate 600 mayor’s offices,” he argues. – “This rush hides a political ploy to subjugate as many of the remaining mayors as possible and create around them regional political forces that will serve PAS.
Ion Ceban emphasizes that “even high-ranking European Union officials recently said in Chisinau that local government reform should have a broad consensus so that people can decide what they want.”
In this context, the MAN party proposes a national referendum. Primar called on all opposition factions in parliament to join the initiative.
“This requires 1/3 of the signatures of MPs,” Ion Ceban argued for his initiative. – If we together support the proposal to organize a national referendum, we will have enough votes and people will make a decision. The reform in its current form is unconstitutional. It cannot be introduced by a simple law, as PAS representatives propose. The liquidation or reorganization of any locality should be done by local referendum after a national referendum.”
