The new service could be built around generative AI tools and change programmers’ usual workflows, InfoWorld believes.
According to the publication, OpenAI is working on a source code hosting system that will be tightly integrated with AI tools. It is assumed that the service will be able to automatically analyze projects, suggest fixes and generate code based on the development context.
Alternative to GitHub
The impetus for the creation of the project was the problems with the availability of GitHub, which in recent months several times interfered with the work of the company’s engineers. According to media reports, the project is still at an early stage and may only be unveiled in a few months.
Today, GitHub remains the largest platform for collaborative software development – the service is used by more than 180 million developers worldwide. However, experts believe that the development of AI may lead to the emergence of a new generation of programming tools.
Lian Jye Su, principal analyst at research firm Omdia, said the development platform market is already undergoing a transformation. “Despite GitHub’s huge popularity, many developers are keeping a close eye on alternatives, especially after the service became part of Microsoft,” he said.
Amid the booming artificial intelligence market, the move could be a strategic one. A recent investment round valued OpenAI at about $840 billion, and the total amount raised was about $110 billion, making the company one of the most expensive tech startups in the world, investing.com noted.
Experts believe that if OpenAI does launch a new platform for developers, it could change the balance of power in the software industry and intensify competition in the fast-growing segment of AI tools.
