Nicusor Dan: Romania can attend the Peace Council meeting only as an observer

Romania is currently negotiating with U.S. authorities on the status of potential Peace Council members as observers, the only provision Romania can accept due to "inconsistencies" between the Council's Charter and Romania's existing commitments, Logos Press reported.

This was stated by the country’s President Nicusor Dan. The final decision will be made after the talks, “probably this week”, the Romanian president said.

The first summit of the Peace Council, to which Dan has been invited, will be held on February 19.

“We are still negotiating with the American side. The subject of discussion is the status of the country, which at the moment can only be an observer. That is, what will be the format of the discussion and what will be the role of any observers at this meeting. Depending on the response of the American side, we will decide whether to go or not,” he said.

The president also said that he was negotiating with European partners regarding their position on the format proposed by the American president, but “Romania gives the answer.”

Asked about the overlap between the UN Charter and the Peace Council, Nicusor Dan said, “Until the discussions take place, which I assume will be difficult, we can only remain observers.”

The head of state concluded by saying that the discussions are dynamic, that the US side is reconsidering its position depending on the responses already received from other states, but a decision is likely to be taken this week.

Moldova, like most third world countries, was not invited by Trump to the Peace Council he is creating.
