New rules for the production and sale of eggs. What are the specifics?

The government has approved new rules for the sale of eggs. They require producers to provide more detailed information on the product packaging and provide for better traceability of the product from farm to commercial outlet. Producers are also required to comply with the conditions for exporting eggs to the EU market.

According to the regulation, eggs are categorized into category A (for the final consumer) and B (for industrial processing). In the case of Category A eggs, the method of rearing of laying hens will also be indicated on the outside of the package. In particular, outdoor, floor housing, improved cages.

Among the innovations is the definition of the minimum shelf life (expiration date indicated on the package). To guarantee freshness, Category A eggs must be packed no later than the tenth day after they were laid. Labels are affixed to egg packages in such a way that they tear when the package is opened.

The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) is responsible for monitoring compliance with the regulation. The agency will conduct inspections along the entire product distribution chain, including border crossing points.

Egg production regulations

The draft sets out detailed rules for each of the egg production systems. For example, in the free-range system, the maximum allowable density in open space is 2500 hens per hectare (minimum 4 square meters per bird). This area must be covered with vegetation and located no more than 150 meters from building exits. Birds should have unobstructed access to the paddock area throughout the day. In floor housing and improved cage systems, the new regulations require technical equipment such as individual perches and resting areas to help reduce stress and disease in poultry.

To facilitate the process of bringing egg farms into compliance with the new standards, the AGGRI project, funded by the World Bank, will make them eligible for grants for biosecurity measures and modern maintenance systems.

Applications for poultry farm modernization projects are open until May 29, 2026, with grants of up to $1 million, but not more than 50% of the investment.

According to ANSA, in the Republic of Moldova there are 13 enterprises authorized to produce eggs for final human consumption and 13 farms for laying hens. In 2025, 636.4 million eggs will be produced in our country, which is 1.4% more than in 2024. Domestic production covers the population’s demand for this foodstuff.

From April 2024, Moldova has the right to export eggs to the EU market.
