This situation forced the NBM to reach reserves. Compared to the previous month, the net supply of foreign currency from individuals increased by 11 million euros (+4.2%), but it could not satisfy the entire net demand from economic agents – it increased by 46.1 million euros (+15.2%).
Under these circumstances, the NBM intervened on the local interbank market, selling foreign currency in the amount of 29.1 million euros. However, despite the regulator’s support, the national currency slightly lost ground. The Moldovan leu/euro exchange rate appreciated on average by 0.7%, to 19.6668 EUR/MDL, compared to 19.5240 EUR/MDL in May.
In June, the currency market turnover revitalized. Both sales and purchases are growing. In the structure of net supply of foreign currency from individuals, the main share still belongs to the single European currency (69.3%), but the volume of transactions with the dollar (22%) and other currencies (8.8%) also increased, which is quite understandable in terms of seasonal business activity.
