Moldovan wheat exports up in February, prices down

In February 2026, the Moldovan grain market saw an increase in wheat export supplies. Last month, compared to the previous month, the volume of external wheat supplies almost doubled - from 40.4 thousand tons to 72.2 thousand tons. Apparently, farmers sold off their stocks to replenish working capital on the eve of the spring field work campaign.

However, despite the intensified supply of wheat for sale – both in Moldova and in neighboring Black Sea countries – wholesale prices for this type of grain remained stable, on average at the level of 3.82 lei/kg. Partly, it reflected the stagnation of quotations on the stock exchanges of Europe and USA. The absence of a pronounced strengthening of the price environment, as a result, did not contribute to bringing February exports this year to its record level (120 thousand tons, February 2024).

According to the analysis of economist Iurie Rizhi, in the current marketing season (from July 2025 to February 2026), Moldova exported 744.9 thousand tons of wheat, which is 12.9% more compared to the same period of the previous season.

Prices decreased

Despite the increase in volumes, the average export price of Moldovan wheat decreased by 5% in February. The working price of the largest number of contracts is 3.60 lei/kg. That is, wheat in the last month of winter was the only basic crop of the grain group with negative price dynamics in the current season.

The total amount of wheat exports for the mentioned period of the current marketing season reached 2.68 billion lei, which is 7% more compared to the figure for the same period of the 2024-25 season (2.5 billion lei). Judging by the analysis of the mentioned expert, the increase in revenues was ensured exclusively due to the increase in the physical volume of exports.

Export geography

The main direction of Moldovan wheat export in the current marketing year was and still is the European Union. The largest buyers of wheat from Moldova during the mentioned period were: Italy – 310,7 thousand tons, Greece – 136,7 thousand tons and Romania – 125,8 thousand tons. The price of Moldovan wheat sent to these markets varies from 3.4 to 3.65 lei/kg.

At the same time, the buying countries outside the EU, such as Lebanon and Turkey, offered more attractive prices for Moldovan wheat – up to 4.08 lei/kg. However, export volumes to these countries have remained low so far.

Market leaders

At the grain market of Moldova in its wheat segment by now three exporting companies dominated: “RUSAGRO-PRIM” SRL – 167,12 thousand tons (22% of the total export volume of RM), “AGRO-NOVA PRIM” SRL – 111,53 thousand tons (15%), “OROM-IMEXPO” SRL – 102,80 thousand tons (14%). Together they control more than half of wheat exports from the country.
