Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Eugeniu Osmochescu said earlier that access to the Moldovan labor market for EU citizens is already as easy as possible. The next step is to expand employment opportunities for specialists from other parts of the world to help the country’s economy cope with the labor shortage.
Why does Moldova need foreign labor?
The need for personnel is particularly acute in construction and agriculture, sectors that require labor to support ongoing projects and further growth.
At the same time, the Minister emphasizes that the attraction of foreign labor force will take place in compliance with all norms and requirements related to state security.
Thus, the liberalization of the labour market is seen as an instrument of economic development. This is a step that should help Moldovan businesses to grow and the country to remain competitive.
Moldova has experienced large-scale emigration in recent decades, with more than 1 million citizens (up to one third of the population) abroad.
In the last 5-8 years alone, between 200,000 and 300,000 people have left the country, and the annual outflow is about 35,000-42,000. The country’s population has fallen from 4.36 million to about 2.4 million since 1991.
