Moldova is among the European leaders in terms of nature reserves

This was reminded by the Ministry of Environment in connection with the World Day of Reserves and Protected Areas, which was celebrated on January 11.

Moldova has five scientific reserves (“Codri”, “Plaiul Fagului”, “Prutul de Jos”, “Padurea Domniasca” and “Iagorlic”), the National Park “Orhei”, as well as many other categories of protected areas. These include natural monuments, landscape and resource protected areas, large forest areas and floodplain areas.

Scientific reserves are categorized as strictly protected areas for scientific research, as well as the preservation of unique ecosystems. For example, the Codri reserve, the oldest in the country, was created to preserve the unique forests of central Moldova.

The territory of “Padurea Domniasca” is home to the largest array of century-old oaks, and is considered the “home of bison”.

In the Lower Prut Scientific Protected Area, the Prut River, Lake Beleu, meadows and meadow forests create a natural mosaic that serves as a refuge for thousands of birds. Over 20,000 different birds can be observed there throughout the year, and beavers have recently returned to the area.

The Yagorlyk Reserve is designed to protect the unique ecosystem of the Dniester River.

And the Orhei National Park can be considered a model of balance between the protection of nature, historical monuments and the development of local communities.

In order to preserve and develop these protected areas, Moldova intends to create the Natura 2000 network. As explained by the Ministry of Environment, the aim is to ensure the long-term protection of wild species and valuable natural habitats in order to preserve nature and ensure a balanced socio-economic development of these areas.
