The first DNA laboratory in Moldova was opened back in 2018 on the basis of the Forensic Medicine Center using budgetary funds, and in September 2024, the General Inspectorate of Police launched another high-tech laboratory for rapid DNA analysis. The laboratory was put into operation within the EU4Reforms – DNA project with the support of the European Union and the Central Project Management Agency of Lithuania.
Since the launch of the system, Moldovan criminalists, trained by their Lithuanian colleagues, are already independently obtaining genetic profiles of suspects. In addition to the numbers of solved crimes, this is also the ability of law enforcement agencies to respond to the challenges of the time, to monitor the criminal situation with suspects due to the complicated process of investigating modern crimes, participants of the event noted.
“Advanced technology allows for much greater accuracy in investigations, which makes a noticeable difference in the pace and quality of investigations. At the same time, the training provided both in the country and in Lithuania helps specialists to apply modern methods with greater confidence and treat each piece of evidence with the attention required for a good case investigation,” said Minister Daniella Misail-Nichytin.
