Kulminski: U.S. will resume issuing immigrant visas after criteria revision

Vlad Kulminsky

Moldovan Ambassador to the United States Vlad Kulminski said that this decision concerns only those who move permanently to the United States and is aimed at limiting the use of social resources and social assistance by those who move to the United States. He confirmed that this measure does not affect non-immigrant visas.

“It is very important to understand that tourist, student, work visas, and business travel visas will continue to be issued and processed in the normal, standard manner and are not subject to these restrictions. The U.S. has taken administrative action and temporarily suspended the issuance of immigrant visas to nationals of several States, including the Republic of Moldova, effective January 21, 2026. This administrative suspension will remain in effect until the process of reviewing the criteria related to the use of state aid is finalized,” Kulminski told Radio Moldova.

Referring to the dossiers for immigration visas, which are already being processed, he said that their examination continues, but the direct issuance of visas is temporarily suspended until the administrative measure is lifted.

The ambassador also noted that this is a “limited impact” on Moldovan citizens, as the U.S. Embassy issued only a few dozen immigrant visas annually.

Culminschi recommended citizens to follow the official information on the website of the US Embassy in Chisinau, on the platform www.travel.state.gov, as well as on the official channels of the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In addition, the ambassador reiterated that the Moldovan-American relations remain strong: “The relations between Moldova and the United States of America remain stable. The bilateral cooperation continues, including within the implementation of the 130-million-dollar Straseni-Gutinas project. These days, Minister Dorin Jungietu is paying a visit to the USA, where he is scheduled to hold meetings at the highest level, including a meeting with Energy Secretary Chris Wright, as well as with other American officials. Also, other high-level visits are planned in various fields, including economy. The Moldovan authorities are also actively working on the reduction of tariffs on the export of Moldovan products to the United States market. Thus, the relations between our countries remain strong,” the ambassador concluded.

We shall remind you that the USA suspended processing of immigration visas for citizens of 75 countries, including Moldova. This measure was introduced as part of the fight against immigration launched by President Donald Trump after his return to power.
