Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary
The Hungarian government has decided not to cut off the electricity supply to Ukraine for the time being because it could seriously complicate the situation of people living there, including the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia.
This was announced today, February 22, by Hungarian Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Minister Péter Szijjártó following an emergency meeting of the country’s Energy Security Council, noting that the dispute is with the Ukrainian leadership, not with ordinary citizens.
As of February 2026, Hungary is the largest exporter of electricity for Ukraine, providing between 40 percent and 50 percent of all Ukrainian electricity imports.
