Hungary adopts resolution against Ukraine's admission to EU
The resolution proposed by the faction of the ruling party FIDES – Hungarian Civic Union is of a recommendatory nature. The government intends to be guided by the MPs’ opinion during its consultations with the EU. This is reported by BelTA with reference to the Hungarian portal Hirado.
The document notes that the decisions of the EU leaders increase the risk of escalation, bringing Europe closer to war. Hungary opposes the hasty admission of Ukraine to the EU, as it is “in a state of war”. It is also emphasized that Kiev does not meet the necessary criteria for membership.
The resolution also calls on the government to support international peace efforts to settle the conflict in Ukraine and to refrain from sending arms and money to the country.
Budapest maintains a tough stance on Ukraine’s membership in the EU. In November 2025, the country’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto emphasized that under the current national government and Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Hungary would not support Ukraine’s accession to the association. Since the end of 2025, the Hungarian parliament has intensified its opposition to Ukraine’s accession to the EU by using its veto. Budapest motivates its position by the risks of involvement in war and economic factors, saying that Ukraine should remain a “buffer”.
Thus, Hungary blocked the EU’s annual statement on the enlargement process without recognizing Ukraine’s progress. As well as the issuance of €90 billion Eurobonds to support Ukraine, which derailed the EU’s “plan B” to finance Kiev.
