European market opens to transgenic maize and sugar beet
As reports press service of the EC, such a decision was taken after a scientific evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority, which concluded that the said GM crops are as safe as their conventional counterparts.
“These GM crops have undergone a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation procedure that ensures a high level of protection for human and animal health as well as the environment. The EC decisions allow the import of these genetically modified crops only for use in food and animal feed, but not for cultivation in the EU,” the statement elaborated.
The permits are valid for 10 years and any product made from these genetically modified crops will be subject to EU labeling and traceability rules. The Commission had a legal obligation to decide on this authorization and its renewal after Member States did not reach a qualified majority either for or against these decisions.
